A stable home: Autocorrelated Kernel Density Estimated home ranges of the critically endangered Elongated tortoise

چکیده
Home range analysis is a standard and fundamental concept in ecology used to describe animal space use over their lifetimes. Connecting home sizes with characteristics, location, habitat can be inform conservation decisions. Reptiles are frequently lacking robust estimates of use, particularly reptiles tropical regions. Here we analyse publicly available dataset, collected by the authors this study, describing movements Critically Endangered Elongated tortoises Indotestudo elongata. The tortoise data included locations 17 (12 females, 5 males) on average once every three days for an duration 353.76 SE ± 33.10 days. We these estimate tortoise, explore how size sex influences size. To mitigate issues resulting from low effective sample temporal resolution data, modern estimation method – Autocorrelated Kernel Density Estimators (AKDE). found 14 individuals appear occupying stable (using variograms determine residency). AKDE all residency was 44.81 10.44 ha. Bayesian Regression Models suggest comparable between male female ranges, despite males being physically larger than females both mass carapace length. These have added utility more other studies, less susceptible errors suboptimal tracking regime, well positioned inclusion future meta-analyses. Rigorous home range estimation with movement data: a new autocorrelated kernel density estimator.
Quantifying animals' home ranges is a key problem in ecology and has important conservation and wildlife management applications. Kernel density estimation (KDE) is a workhorse technique for range delineation problems that is both statistically efficient and nonparametric. KDE assumes that the data are independent and identically distributed (IID). However, animal tracking data, which are routi...
متن کاملEstimated home ranges can misrepresent habitat relationships on patchy landscapes
Home ranges of animals are generally structured by the selective use of resource-bearing patches that comprise habitat. Based on this concept, home ranges of animals estimated from location data are commonly used to infer habitat relationships. Because home ranges estimated from animal locations are largely continuous in space, the resource-bearing patches selected by an animal from a fragmente...
متن کاملA scaled line-based kernel density estimator for the retrieval of utilization distributions and home ranges from GPS movement tracks
Utilization distributions (UDs) can be used to describe with what intensity an animal or human may use a certain geographical location within the environment it is living in. Such a density distribution model represents one way to describe and obtain an animals’ home range in wildlife ecology. Several methods to derive UDs and subsequently home ranges have been developed, for instance Kernel De...
متن کاملForaging optimally for home ranges
Economic models predict behavior of animals based on the presumption that natural selection has shaped behaviors important to an animal’s fitness to maximize benefits over costs. Economic analyses have shown that territories of animals are structured by trade-offs between benefits gained from resources and costs of defending them. Intuitively, home ranges should be similarly structured, but tra...
متن کاملStandardising Home Range Studies for Improved Management of the Critically Endangered Black Rhinoceros.
Comparisons of recent estimations of home range sizes for the critically endangered black rhinoceros in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP), South Africa, with historical estimates led reports of a substantial (54%) increase, attributed to over-stocking and habitat deterioration that has far-reaching implications for rhino conservation. Other reports, however, suggest the increase is more likely an ar...
